Developed by the National Collaborating Centres for Public Health (NCCs) with funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada, the competencies define the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes for effective public health practice.
To update the 2008 Core Competencies for Public Health in Canada, the National Collaborating Centres (NCCs) undertook an extensive multistage engagement process, in both official languages, to obtain input and feedback from the public health community on core competencies.
The final document, available in English and French, presents 64 competency statements in 10 categories and includes a glossary of key terms.
Its adoption is a shared responsibility across jurisdictions and will require multisectoral collaboration. By providing a common foundation, the competencies are expected to strengthen and unify public health, guide training, workforce development, staffing, and professional learning, while supporting evidence-informed, ethical, equitable, and population-focused programs and services.
