L’auteure y définit les concepts de race, de racisme et de racialisation, en insistant plus particulièrement sur le colonialisme de peuplement et le racisme structurel.
En juin 2015, la Commission de vérité et réconciliation du Canada a déposé ses recommandations « [a]fin de remédier aux séquelles laissées par les pensionnats et de faire avancer le processus de réconciliation […](p. 347) » avec les peuples autochtones. Le sommaire du rapport final de la Commission comporte des chapitres sur l’histoire des pensionnats autochtones et les séquelles que ceux-ci ont laissées, le défi de la réconciliation et les 94 appels à l’action.
