This article identifies challenges of putting equity-focused research into practice and how community based participatory research (CBPR) can address these challenges. CBPR involves researchers working with communities on issues important to them, and to improve health and eliminate health disparities.
This report examines 13 programs or policies that have had some success in reducing health inequalities in Canada. All of the selected interventions set out to reduce health inequities through the social determinants of health, and they were evaluated using current medical evidence-based standards.

This review-of-reviews identified 32 recent systematic reviews of interventions aimed at influencing health and health inequalities through the social determinants of health. There was some evidence that housing and work environment interventions have the potential to reduce health “inequalities.”
This guide was designed to support sex- and gender-based analysis (SGBA) in planning health programs, developing health policies and conducting research. SGBA identifies health inequities arising from gender relations and the interaction of gender with other social factors.
Dr. Murnaghan, Associate Professor, School of Nursing, University of PEI, discusses how the SHAPES (School health action planning and evaluation system) framework is used to inform the design of chronic illness prevention initiatives in PEI schools. Her university-community research recommended policy and practice changes in schools, based on broader, local data.
